There were so many GREAT performances by our Wildcat kids this weekend at Locust Valley that it was extremely difficult to pick the most outstanding.
(See the Homepage's "HEADLINES" for all the Wildcat results).

Ben Freund and Nick Loiacono stick out though.

Ben Freund - Entering the 1st tournament of his young career, Ben couldn't have known what to expect. However, he came through like a wily veteran and won the Championship at his weight class. Ben pinned his first opponent. In the finals, Ben had just tied the score at 4-4 at the end of the 2nd period, when his back started to hurt badly. Ben was in pain and told me he thought he had a hernia or a pulled muscle. When I told him he just tied the score and could win the "Gold," the tears stopped and a determined look came across his face. Ben dominated the 3rd period, winning in thrilling fashion versus a much more experienced wrestler. Way to go, Ben!

Nick Loiacono - Nick also faced a more seasoned opponent in the finals.
He took his man down for a 2-0 lead after one period. In the 2nd, Nick gained a point on a penalty (3-0 lead), but then found himself on his back in a painfully awkward position. A lesser man would have gotten pinned in that position, but Nick hung tough and wiggled his way out. The score was now tied at 3-3 after two periods. In the 3rd, we had the choice of position and put Nick on the bottom because we had faith that Nick could get out. Nick escaped for a 4-3 lead and landed a takedown to secure the Championship. Great toughness, Nick!

All the boys improved and we as coaches were pleased with what we saw.
