Lewis Grama, Anthony Cerrone & Vinnie Ali

Posted Monday, March 12, 2007 by Ken Richards

Although there were SO MANY memorable moments from this past weekend's action, these stuck out with the coaches:

LEWIS GRAMA - wrestled this past Saturday at the always tough Brentwood Tournament, and just missed winning the Championship. Lewis, a 2nd grader in just his 1st season on the mat, entered his 2nd tournament of the season, and won his 1st match of the day 1-0. Entering the 3rd period scoreless, Lewis chose bottom position and escaped for the win. In the finals, Lewis and his opponent from Brentwood were relentless in their movement. Midway through the 3rd, Lewis trailed 15-10. He then turned his Brentwood foe to his back for an extended time, but was only awarded 2 back points by the Brentwood official. Lewis now trailed 15-12 as they went out of bounds with only 10 seconds remaining. He needed to turn his man to tie it up. Lewis did just that! However, he received only a 2-point near fall, and came up just short, 15-14. It was a great match and a great try by Lewis, who DID NOT QUIT!!! Way to go, Lewis!

ANTHONY CERRONE - has undoubtedly had THE TOUGHEST schedule of all our Wildcat Wrestlers this season, wrestling some of the best kids in Nassau County, and staying close with all of them. On Sunday, Anthony put all that hard work and experience to good use, going 3-0 and capturing the CHAMPIONSHIP at the Walt Whitman Tournament in Huntington. Anthony used a variety of takedowns, headlocks, and GREAT riding technique all day to keep his opponents in check. AC was very methodical, keeping his opponents on the mat, and then looking for the Cradles, Halfs, and Pump Handles!!! We were all proud to see his improvement and BIG PAYOFF!!! Good Stuff, AC.

VINNIE ALI - is another one of our Wildcat Wrestlers who has had to endure a tough list of Nassau County opponents this year. Vinnie decided to take some of that out on some unsuspecting Suffolk grapplers at the Whitman tourney, as he too went undefeated and won the CHAMPIONSHIP. He was able to score both offensive and defensive takedowns, execute nice Stand-ups, and control his matches by using his two of his favorite moves, the Crunch Cradle and CrossFace Cradle. Good work, Vin!!!

Congratulations to this week's POW's. By the way....as usual, Ben Freund won yet another CHAMPIONSHIP. See "HEADLINES" for info on Ben, the Loiacono's successful weekend at the NYS Championships, and the rest of our WILDCAT WRESTLERS.
