SHAWN (Mosca) & SEAN (Richards) ARE WHITMAN CHAMPS!!!

Posted Monday, December 10, 2007 by Ken Richards

The Nassau Wildcats traveled to South Huntington this past Sunday, December 2nd, to participate in the Wildcat Classic. Eighteen Wildcat wrestlers entered the tournament, several who had never wrestled competitively before. Overall, our kids posted a respectable 19-25 (.432) mark on the day. This is not too bad in light of some tough draws in the brackets of our less experienced kids and some questionable calls on the mat. In any event, it was a good day for the kids.

Shawn Mosca and Sean Richards both went undefeated on the day, each posting 3-0 marks and winning the Championships in their respective weight classes. Mosca (3rd grade) bounced back from a tough Rocky Point/Razor tournament the week before and used that experience to capture gold in the 65 lb. Midget division. Richards (6th grade) remained unbeaten (7-0) on the season, winning his 2nd tournament Championship of the year in the Novice division at 100 lbs.

The Loiacono brothers also shined at the tournament. "Iron" Mikey Loiacono (3rd grade), who has now made the " White Tennis Shoe" fashionable on the mat, took home 2nd place after dropping a heartbreaker in the finals. Brother Nick Loiacono (7th grader), also placed 2nd on the day. Nick recorded a 3-1 record on the day, his only loss coming at the hands of former Wildcat teammate, Mike Cerrone.

Other standouts were Nick Matteo (4rd place), Max Mosca (2nd place), Dillon Hanel (4th place), Craig Mazzeo (4th place), Brandon Casale (3rd place), Vinnie Ali (3rd place), and Kevin Polinsky (2nd place).

Zach Chorost, a 1st year, 5th grader, entered his 1st tournament, winning his final match to place 3rd in his division. Nick D'Angelo, Nick LaGinestra, Robert Devlin, Mohamed Elzanaty, and Nick Iuvara all wrestled extremely hard against VERY tough opponents and we, as coaches, could not have been more proud of their efforts.

A special shout out to Coach Burkey. We all hope he feels much better for the next tournament and is able to get out of bed.
