A GREAT DAY FOR THE WILDCATS AT LOCUST VALLEY

Posted Monday, January 14, 2008 by Ken Richards

The Nassau Wildcats gave an outstanding performance at the annual Locust Valley tournament on January 13th, winning 6 individual titles. The Wildcats, as a team, posted an 18-16 (.529) record, wherein our more experienced kids finished 10-6 (.625).

Seventeen Wildcat grapplers entered the tournament and 6 were crowned Champions. Nick Matteo improved to 4-3 by winning his 1st tournament. Craig Mazzeo (5th grade) bounced back after some early season struggles and dominated his weight class en route to the gold. First year grappler, Stephen McCleary, continued to impress with his constant movement and technique, in winning his 1st career event. Dillon Hanel (6th grade) won his 2nd tournament in as many weeks, while improving his record to 5-3. Sean Richards (6th grade) ran his record to 13-1 on the year by posting his 4th Championship in five tournaments on the year. And finally, first year grappler, Nick Reda, continues to amaze as he raised his record to 5-1, taking home his second gold medal in three attempts this year. Nick had the most exciting match of the day. He was down 7-2 in the 3rd period vs. a tough, experienced opponent from the Razor club. Nick got out from the bottom, hit a perfect WHIP, and deposited the Razor right on his back for the Win-by-Pin. It was very exciting for all of us watching. See what happens when you pay attention in practice???

Other place winners for the Cats were Zach Chorost (2nd), Joseph Contrastano (2nd), Mike Loiacono (2nd), Shawn Mosca (3rd), Dean Manfredi (3rd) and Nick D'Angelo (3rd). A special shout out to Dean Manfredi, who won his first career match, after a tough inaugural tourney last week. Way to hang tough, Dean!!!

Michael McCleary, Max Mosca, Mark Perrone, Dan Marini and Christian Marini (who lost a thriller of a match 13-12) all showed plenty of courage out there. The coaches could not be more proud of their efforts.
